our vision
A world where LGBTQIA+ people are safe, celebrated, and empowered to thrive
how it started
Our founder, Makai Michelle Ballo (they/them), launched Queerli as a social club in 2021. It started as this little solo venture, because they knew that they wanted more queer connections in their life platonically and romantically at the time. The idea of forming an organization hadn’t crossed their mind, but with each event, it became evident that people craved connection in the same way they did. Long Island was in dire need of spaces for the queer and gender expansive communities – safe spaces, most importantly. Businesses wanted to support, and the LGBTQIA+ communities wanted more. The response has been wild, and it has reinforced the importance of what they were building.
Makai quickly realized that they couldn't do it alone. With help from LGBTQIA+ friends, businesses, and allies, Queerli has grown into a collaborative effort. We founded Queerli as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization at the start of 2023. Together, we've achieved remarkable growth and impact, but there's still so much more to be done.
